AY explains why he stopped going to Church after divorce

Stand-up comedian, actor and filmmaker Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY, has revealed that he stopped attending church following the intense public scrutiny that trailed his divorce.

Speaking in a video shared on his social media page on Sunday, the comedian explained that his decision had nothing to do with losing his faith in God but was influenced by the negative narratives surrounding his personal life.

“For some time now, I stopped attending church not because I stopped believing in God or lost my faith. I was actually navigating a very personal season; the negative narrative put out on the blogs against me.”

AY said he deliberately stayed away from church because he did not want to become the subject of gossip and whispered conversations.

“So, I chose to step back quietly. Part of that decision was because I didn’t want to become the subject of whispered conversations.”

He disclosed that he later found another church and began worshipping there, but his experience took another disappointing turn after he was removed from a church programme he had already been invited to because the church said it was concerned about public perception.

The incident, he said, made him reflect on the true purpose of the church.

“Shouldn’t the church be the safest place to find truth, grace, and restoration? If people cannot run to God’s house when life becomes heavy on them, where are they meant to run to?”

AY questioned whether people facing difficult seasons should instead turn to strangers on social media who judge without knowing the full story or friends who distance themselves out of fear of public opinion.

He stressed that the church should remain a place where people find grace, healing and restoration rather than judgment and condemnation, especially during life's most challenging moments.
